Day 1 - Reykjavik and Golden Circle
Land in Reykjavik and stock a supermarket. Drive the Golden Circle: Thingvellir rift, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall. Evening back in the capital for a lobster soup at a harbor canteen. Sleep in Reykjavik or a guesthouse near Selfoss. Keep the first night easy to fight jet lag and prepare for long daily drives ahead.
Day 2 - South coast waterfalls
Drive east to Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, both roadside and walkable. Afternoon at the Reynisfjara black-sand beach near Vik; watch the basalt columns. Evening in Vik for fish and chips or a soup at a cafe. Stay in a guesthouse. Check the aurora app at night if it is winter and skies are clear.
Day 3 - Glaciers and lagoons
Morning at Solheimajokull glacier viewpoint. Continue to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and the nearby diamond beach with ice on sand. Afternoon short walk at Fjallsarlon. Evening in Hofn for langoustine. Sleep in the east fjords town of Egilsstadir after a long but scenic drive through empty landscapes and low sun.
Day 4 - East fjords
Slow drive through the east fjords with stops at Seydisfjordur, a colorful arts town. Afternoon at Borgarfjordur Eystri for puffins in summer. Evening in Myvatn region. Soak in a geothermal bath near the lake. Dinner at a roadhouse with lamb soup. This is the quietest stretch; fuel up whenever a station appears.
Day 5 - North waterfalls
Morning at Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Afternoon at Godafoss and the Akureyri botanical garden. Evening in Akureyri, Iceland's second city, for a fish dinner and a craft brewery. Sleep here. The north is milder and greener; use the laundromat and restock groceries before the western return leg begins.
Day 6 - Snaefellsnes
Drive west to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Visit Kirkjufell mountain and the black church at Budir. Afternoon at Arnarstapi cliffs and a lava field. Evening seafood in Stykkisholmur. Sleep nearby. This peninsula packs coast, volcano, and village charm into one short loop and is a favorite local escape from Reykjavik.
Day 7 - Back to Reykjavik
Morning at the Blue Lagoon or a quieter geothermal spa near the capital. Return the car and explore Reykjavik's old harbor and Hallgrimskirkja. A farewell dinner of lamb or cod with skyr for dessert. Evening flight or one last aurora watch. Pack the afternoon loosely in case of weather delays on mountain roads.
Daily food picks
Self-cater to save money; supermarkets sell lamb, skyr, and flatbread. Eat one hot meal out daily: fish and chips, langoustine, or lamb soup. Gas-station grills and cafes are reliable. Try the hot dog stand in Reykjavik once. Bakeries cover breakfast. A thermos of coffee keeps costs down during long, cold driving days.
Getting around & budget
Rent a car and drive the Ring Road clockwise. Budget 180 to 280 euros daily with fuel, guesthouses, and meals; camping lowers it. Weather changes fast, so check road.is daily. Book the car and spa ahead in summer. An emergency app and offline maps help. Groceries beat restaurants; one splurge dinner is enough.
